Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to facilitate easier access to loans for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to increase Pakistan’s exports and strengthen the country’s industrial sector.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the need to improve the capacity of small and medium businesses, particularly by supporting farmers in the processing and value addition of agricultural products, including crops and fruits.
The prime minister instructed relevant authorities to provide SMEs with better awareness, financial support, and access to loans so they can expand their operations and contribute more effectively to the national economy.
He also called for encouraging commercial banks to develop specialized loan products for small and medium enterprises. The prime minister said SMEs should be provided assistance in preparing feasibility reports and completing other requirements necessary for obtaining business financing.
Shehbaz Sharif stressed that urgent steps are required to remove obstacles preventing the growth of SMEs. He directed SMEDA to provide special support to young entrepreneurs, including women entrepreneurs, who want to establish small and medium-sized businesses.
During the meeting, SMEDA officials gave a detailed briefing on measures taken to improve facilities for SMEs. The meeting was informed that efforts were made this year to increase the participation of Pakistani SMEs in international markets and promote exports.
According to the briefing, 700 SMEs were facilitated to participate in 16 international events aimed at improving global market access. In addition, training programs were conducted in 35 cities to educate SMEs about financial management, business practices, and regulatory requirements.
The prime minister further directed SMEDA to develop a comprehensive strategy in coordination with the State Bank of Pakistan and commercial banks to improve SMEs’ access to financing.
SMEs play a vital role in Pakistan’s economy by generating employment opportunities, encouraging entrepreneurship, and supporting industrial growth. The government believes that improving financing facilities for these businesses can help increase exports and strengthen economic activity.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, Federal Minister Dr. Musadik Malik, Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar, and senior government officials. Chief secretaries of all four provinces and industry experts also participated through video link.
The government has stated that supporting SMEs, expanding exports, and creating a business-friendly environment remain key priorities for economic development.
