Karachi: In a major stride towards police modernisation, Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Alam Odho has constituted a high-powered committee to review and implement cutting-edge policing technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) systems, cybercrime units and drone-based surveillance operations.
The initiative is a testament to the increasing need for law enforcement agencies to evolve to rapidly changing technological challenges and changing security demands. Sindh Police aims to be a modern, technology-driven institution as digital crimes become more sophisticated and public safety concerns demand more innovative solutions.
The committee will be headed by AIG Establishment and Training Iqbal Dara, according to official details.
The other members are senior officers from important departments including the Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) of Establishment and West Zone, Assistant Inspectors General (AIGs) of State Management and Finance and the East Zone Investigation representative. The committee will include the secretary of the AIG Establishment.
The committee has been asked to review the short-term requirements for the setting up and integration of a number of specialised units in the Sindh Police. These are AI-based systems for operational efficiency, cybercrime wings for digital offences, and drone operation units for aerial surveillance and monitoring. Also to be considered are proposals for special investigation teams, strengthened security forces and professional media and strategic communications units.
Officials view AI and drone technology as having the potential to significantly improve crime prevention, response times and overall effectiveness of policing efforts. The drones can be used for real-time aerial monitoring during emergencies, public gatherings and security operations, while the AI tools could help in data analysis, crime pattern identification and resource management.
The committee will also conduct a full technical review to determine the staffing requirements for these modern units. Emphasis will be placed on the recruitment and induction of information technology specialists and other highly skilled professionals, whose expertise is becoming increasingly important in contemporary law enforcement.
