Sindh has reported 93 laboratory-confirmed cases of mpox so far this year with 11 deaths linked to the viral disease according to the Provincial Disease Surveillance and Response Unit (PDSRU).

Data from the Sindh Health Department’s laboratory surveillance network shows that men account for the majority of confirmed infections. Of the total cases 70 were reported among males representing more than 75 percent of all confirmed infections while 23 cases involved women.

People between the ages of 30 and 39 have emerged as the most affected age group with 26 confirmed cases. The surveillance data also recorded 23 confirmed infections among children aged between zero and nine years.

The monthly figures show that April recorded the highest number of cases, with 31 infections. This was followed by September with 20 cases and August with 17. Seven cases were reported in July, while six have been recorded so far in October. March accounted for five cases, June for four and May for two.

Meanwhile, health authorities have reported a suspected mpox case involving a 50-year-old man from Nawab shah. The patient was transferred in critical condition to the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital in NIPA Karachi where he has been admitted to the intensive care unit.

Hospital officials said the patient had visible lesions on his hands and feet prompting doctors to suspect mpox. Samples have been collected for laboratory testing to confirm the diagnosis.

Health experts explain that mpox can spread through close physical or skin-to-skin contact with an infected person, as well as through contact with lesions, bodily fluids or contaminated objects.

Common symptoms may include fever, headache, body aches, weakness, swollen lymph nodes and skin lesions or blisters. Health officials advise people experiencing symptoms to avoid close contact with others and seek medical evaluation promptly.

Authorities say surveillance efforts are continuing across Sindh and residents are being urged to follow precautionary measures and seek medical assistance when symptoms appear.
