Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan arrived in Islamabad on Friday for an official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and expanding ties between the two countries.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO), Balakrishnan is visiting at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who is scheduled to hold comprehensive talks with his Singaporean counterpart.
The discussions are expected to cover a wide range of bilateral and multilateral issues, including opportunities to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The two foreign ministers will also exchange views on regional and global developments.
The visit carries particular diplomatic significance as Pakistan and Singapore are marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year. It also comes ahead of Singapore’s assumption of the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2027.
The Foreign Office described the visit as an important opportunity to strengthen the longstanding friendship between the two countries and explore new avenues for cooperation.
A key development expected during the visit is the exchange of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on disaster management between Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Singapore’s Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
The proposed agreement is expected to provide a framework for cooperation between the two institutions in disaster preparedness and response.
Pakistan and Singapore have maintained cordial relations based on mutual respect and longstanding friendship. The latest diplomatic engagement reflects their shared interest in broadening this partnership beyond traditional areas of cooperation.
Balakrishnan’s visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to bilateral engagement while offering both sides an opportunity to discuss common challenges and strengthen coordination on regional and international issues.
With the 60-year diplomatic milestone and Singapore’s upcoming ASEAN chairmanship approaching, the visit comes at an important moment for relations between Islamabad and Singapore.
