South Korean Foreign Minister heads to Nepal as flood crisis deepens

During the visit, Cho is scheduled to meet Nepal’s foreign minister to discuss issues of mutual interest and strengthen cooperation between the two countries

SEOUL: South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun is set to visit Nepal from Saturday through Monday, with talks expected to focus on bilateral ties and the aftermath of the country’s devastating floods.

During the visit, Cho is scheduled to meet Nepal’s foreign minister to discuss issues of mutual interest and strengthen cooperation between the two countries, South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.

Cho will also meet South Korean officials deployed in Nepal to assist with search-and-rescue operations following the catastrophic flooding on August 26.

The minister is further expected to meet relatives of nine South Korean workers who remain missing after the disaster at a hydropower project in Nepal.

The floods have caused extensive damage across the country, with Nepalese authorities estimating the economic losses at around $2.56 billion. Rescue teams continue efforts to locate missing people and assess the full scale of the destruction.

Cho’s visit comes as South Korea continues to support emergency response efforts and assist its nationals affected by the disaster.
