NEW YORK: Spain’s World Cup victory became a memorable occasion not only for the national football team but also for the country’s royal family, who witnessed the historic triumph from the stands before joining the celebrations on the pitch.

King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia attended the FIFA World Cup final in New York, where Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time to claim its second world title.

Before the match, King Felipe acknowledged the tension surrounding the final, saying he had complete faith in the national team despite feeling nervous ahead of kick-off.

Spain secured the championship when Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, sparking celebrations among players, supporters and members of the royal family.

Following the final whistle, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia joined the squad during the trophy presentation, celebrating alongside the players and coaching staff as Spain lifted the World Cup.

The celebration revived memories of Spain’s historic first World Cup triumph in 2010. After that victory over the Netherlands in South Africa, the two princesses, then young children, posed with the World Cup trophy in a photograph that became one of the country’s most cherished sporting images.

Sixteen years later, the sisters recreated that memorable moment after witnessing Spain’s second World Cup success, this time as young adults standing alongside the newly crowned champions.

The royal family’s journey to New York also reflected Spain’s constitutional protocol. Princess Leonor, as the heir to the throne, travelled separately from King Felipe VI because members in direct succession do not fly together for security reasons.

Spain’s latest World Cup triumph has added another milestone to the nation’s football history. The victory also comes as the country prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Morocco and Portugal, raising expectations for another memorable chapter in Spanish football.
