One of the most anticipated films in Indian cinema is entering its final stretch. Director SS Rajamouli has confirmed that Varanasi, his upcoming epic action adventure starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra, is approximately 80 days away from completing its shoot, with the crew expected to wrap up filming by September or October 2026.
Rajamouli shared the update during his appearance at the release event for RRR in France. Speaking carefully, mindful of his producer being present, he revealed that the major action spectacle portions of the film had already been completed, with only smaller remaining sequences left to film. “My producer is right there, so he wouldn’t let me reveal too much,” he said. “I can say that we have finished the major action spectacle portions of the film and we just have small portions which will be wrapped up in 80 days.”
The update is a welcome development for fans who have been eagerly following the production, which has been underway for well over a year. Priyanka Chopra previously revealed during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that the film had been shooting for 14 months at that point, with roughly another six months to go. She also reflected on her return to Indian cinema after nearly seven years away, describing Rajamouli as one of India’s most amazingly talented directors and saying she was looking forward to the adventure ahead.
Varanasi is a Telugu language epic action adventure co-written by Rajamouli, V. Vijayendra Prasad and S. S. Kanchi. The story centres on a Shiva devotee sent on a mysterious mission to locate an ancient cosmic artifact. As he travels through history uncovering clues, he discovers that the person who assigned the quest is a powerful villain seeking world domination. The ensemble cast includes Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles, alongside Prithviraj Sukumaran and Prakash Raj.
The film’s release date was officially announced on January 30, when Chopra shared a spectacular space-themed poster on Instagram, revealing that Varanasi would arrive in cinemas on April 7, 2027. The poster depicted an asteroid striking the earth in the shape of the number seven, with the date April 2027 written across it. Chopra captioned the post with clear excitement, writing that Varanasi would be in cinemas on April 7th, 2027.
Rajamouli is coming off the back of the massive global success of RRR, which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu in 2023 and introduced his filmmaking to audiences across the world. Expectations for Varanasi are correspondingly high, and with the production now in its final phase, the wait for audiences eager to see what he has in store is nearly over.
