LONDON: Chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi has been honoured with the prestigious Hubert Walter Award for Reconciliation and Interfaith Cooperation in recognition of his longstanding efforts to promote peace, religious harmony and dialogue.
The award was presented at a ceremony held at the historic Lambeth Palace in London by Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally.
Ashrafi was among the prominent individuals recognised in this year’s Lambeth Awards, which honour contributions to reconciliation and cooperation between different faith communities.
According to a statement issued on the occasion, the award recognised Ashrafi’s decades-long engagement in peacebuilding, religious diplomacy, interfaith dialogue and efforts to promote harmony within and among religious communities.
His work has also focused on protecting the rights of minorities and vulnerable groups, encouraging peaceful coexistence and opposing extremism, terrorism and sectarian violence.
The statement said Ashrafi has remained involved in initiatives aimed at bringing religious communities closer together and encouraging mutual respect while maintaining his Islamic identity.
The Hubert Walter Award is one of the Lambeth Awards presented by the Archbishop of Canterbury to recognise distinguished contributions to reconciliation and interfaith cooperation.
Ashrafi has previously received the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s Global Peace Award for his contribution to peace, harmony and cooperation. The statement clarified that the OIC honour and the Hubert Walter Award are separate international recognitions.
His recent honour was described as recognition of his efforts to promote a message of moderation, tolerance, brotherhood and dialogue at both national and international levels.
Ashrafi also serves on several international Islamic and interfaith platforms, including the Supreme Council of the Muslim World League, the International Tazeem-e-Haramain Sharifain Council and the International Muslim Forum.
