Thailand’s golden luck ritual

People around the world follow different traditions in the hope of gaining good luck and wealth. In Thailand one unusual ritual has attracted attention for its unique use of gold.

In the historic city of Ayutthaya people visit a special place and wait for their turn to take part in the ritual.  Very thin sheets of gold are placed on their foreheads cheeks and chin. Within minutes their faces look like shiny golden masks.

The tradition is known as Nanathong an old spiritual practice. Its followers believe that putting gold on the face can bring good luck attract wealth and improve chances of success in business and work.

The ritual is especially popular among small business owners and traders.  Some people visit the site when their businesses are struggling hoping the ritual will bring better opportunities.

During the ceremony Feng Shui practitioners or Buddhist monks place the gold sheets on participants faces. Believers say the practice can also boost confidence and help people communicate better with others.
