Iran has warned outside countries to stay away from any military show of strength in the Strait of Hormuz. This warning makes sense. The strait is one of the most important oil routes in the world. It sits next to Iran and other Gulf countries. It does not belong to Britain, France, or the United States. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the strait should not become a stage for military demonstrations by foreign powers. He is correct. The countries along the coastline are the ones who should protect this waterway. They understand its importance. They live with the consequences of instability there every single day. Britain and France have offered to help protect freedom of navigation in the strait. But this offer raises a fair question. Why do countries from thousands of miles away feel entitled to send warships into this region. Iran has called itself a responsible regional power and a guarantor of security in the strait. This is a reasonable position. Foreign military movements in the area only raise tension. They do not lower it.
Gharibabadi warned that any country creating instability would be held responsible for what follows. This is a fair warning, not a threat. Outside military adventurism in the Gulf has caused problems before. It should not be repeated now. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has paused talks with Iran out of respect for the funeral period following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This pause is a small but decent gesture. But respect for Iran should extend beyond a funeral pause. It should extend to accepting that Gulf security is a regional matter. Outside powers should step back and let that happen.
