According to details, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has decided to significantly expand the Maryam Nawaz E-Bike Scheme for young students especially female students by providing 100,000 electric bikes across the province within one year.
Under this initiative, students across Punjab will be able to purchase modern electric bikes by paying only Rs2,100 per month through an interest-free installment plan.
Rs70,000 government subsidy
The Punjab government will provide a Rs70,000 subsidy for each electric bike substantially reducing its purchase price. Students will only need to pay a down payment of Rs14,000 after which they can pay the remaining amount through easy monthly installments of Rs2,100.
Special relief for female students
The Chief Minister also announced a major incentive for female students. The Punjab government will cover both the down payment and registration fee for eligible female applicants. This means female students will not have to make any upfront payment when receiving the bike and will only need to pay the monthly installment of Rs2,100.
Scheme expanded to government employees
The scope of the scheme has also been extended to Punjab government employees who will likewise be able to obtain electric bikes through easy installment plans.
Eligibility criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Age: 18 years or older.
- Education: Must be enrolled as a regular student at a degree college or university in Punjab recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
- License: Must possess a valid motorcycle learner’s permit or a full driving license.
If the number of applications exceeds the available quota, successful applicants will be selected through a transparent electronic balloting process.
Public E-Bike Rental Project
To help reduce fuel costs and environmental pollution, the Punjab government has also decided to launch 10,000 electric bikes for public rental in Lahore during the first phase of the project. Additionally, around 300 high-tech docking and charging stations will be established across the city allowing users to conveniently charge the bikes.
According to the government, the initiative aims to reduce dependence on expensive petrol, promote environmentally friendly transportation and provide the public with a more affordable travel option.
