Trump bars CNN, MS NOW and Politico from White House

US President Donald Trump has announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico will no longer be allowed access to the White House, accusing the three news organisations of repeatedly publishing what he described as “fake news.”

Trump announced the decision on Friday in a post on his social media platform, saying the restrictions would take effect immediately. He also suggested that other media organisations could face similar restrictions in the future.

The president said news outlets should not be allowed to publish what he characterised as false or fabricated reports about him, his administration or the United States. He did not identify specific reports from the three organisations that prompted the decision.

CNN, MS NOW and Politico, as well as the National Press Club, did not immediately respond to requests for comment, according to reports.

The move comes amid Trump’s longstanding disputes with several major news organisations. He has repeatedly criticised media outlets over coverage of his administration and has urged broadcasters to drop programmes he considers critical of him or his policies. He has also called for regulatory action against some broadcasters.

The latest decision could face legal challenges because access restrictions involving journalists and government officials can raise questions concerning First Amendment protections for freedom of speech and the press. The exact manner in which the White House intends to implement the restrictions was not immediately clear.

Trump has previously taken action against other media organisations. In 2025, the Associated Press was excluded from parts of the White House press pool after the news agency continued using the name “Gulf of Mexico” rather than Trump’s preferred “Gulf of America.” The AP subsequently challenged the restriction in court.

The president has also been involved in legal disputes with major news organisations, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Earlier cases involving ABC and CBS resulted in settlements in which the broadcasters agreed to pay $15 million and $16 million, respectively.
