US President Donald Trump has announced the creation of a new task force to oversee the country’s artificial intelligence policy and strengthen its position in the rapidly developing technology sector.

Trump said the new body, called the “Super Intelligence Force”, will be led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton. The task force will coordinate the federal government’s engagement with technology companies, consumers, public interest groups, religious organisations and critical infrastructure providers.

The force will report directly to Trump and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. Several senior officials will also join the group, including Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson, Undersecretary of Defense for Research, Engineering Emil Michael and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor.

The announcement follows Trump’s decision to rebrand artificial intelligence as “Super Intelligence”. Under an executive order signed on September 29, US government agencies were instructed to use terms such as “SI” and “Super Intelligence” instead of “artificial intelligence” in official documents, websites and communications.

Trump has argued that the word “artificial” makes the technology sound less significant. However, some experts have questioned the rebranding, saying “super intelligence” generally refers to systems that could exceed human capabilities and may create confusion.

The new task force also comes amid growing debate over how closely AI companies should be regulated. Executives from major technology firms recently signed a voluntary agreement related to AI safety. Trump has largely opposed calls for tougher government oversight and has supported allowing technology companies greater freedom to manage the risks themselves.

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has also argued that society should accept some risks from AI because of the potential benefits and the importance of keeping the technology accessible.

Clayton, who became national intelligence director in August, has previously described AI as both an opportunity and a threat that requires careful management.

The rebranding has already received support from some technology leaders. Elon Musk said he would rename his company’s AI platform from SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI, reflecting the administration’s new terminology.
