The Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Ain Pakistan (TTAP) has accused PPP Vice President Sherry Rehman of violating an understanding reached during talks between the government and opposition over the PTI’s planned long march.
The accusation came after Rehman said the PPP wanted the long march to be ended rather than merely postponed or suspended.
The first round of negotiations between the government and opposition concluded on Friday. The two sides are scheduled to resume discussions at 2pm on Saturday in the National Assembly speaker’s chamber.
TTAP spokesperson Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai said both sides had agreed not to publicly disclose details of the negotiations. He criticised Rehman’s remarks and said the opposition had not agreed to postpone the march unconditionally.
According to Yousafzai, the opposition presented its demands during the meeting, while the government delegation shared its concerns. The opposition then sought time to consult on the issues discussed.
He said the details of the talks had also been shared with opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai during a meeting on the alliance’s future course of action.
Rehman, meanwhile, said the PPP believed the PTI’s long march should be called off because the country was facing serious security challenges. She pointed to the worsening situation in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and the deaths of civilians, police personnel and soldiers in acts of terrorism.
She said terrorism remained a red line for the PPP and stressed that political disputes should be resolved through democratic and constitutional means.
Rehman later clarified that her remarks were not intended to disclose confidential details of the negotiations. She said both sides had agreed to wait until the next meeting before revealing specific developments.
She also rejected the impression that she had said the PTI was seeking additional time for negotiations. Rehman said PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and President Asif Ali Zardari wanted political tensions to be addressed through a political framework, particularly amid rising militancy and instability.
