15 years later, Mahira Khan brings back Humsafar magic

Pakistani actress Mahira Khan has marked 15 years of Humsafar with a heartfelt tribute to the drama that became one of the most defining projects of her career.

The actress shared a special video on Instagram featuring two memorable moments from her journey. One clip shows her as Khirad in the iconic 2011 drama, while the other features her twirling as Bilqees Bano in her latest drama, Mitti De Baway.

The timing made the tribute even more special. Mitti De Baway premiered this month around the same time of year that Humsafar first aired 15 years ago.

In her message, Mahira addressed her fans as her “dearest” and “most precious Humsafars”. She reflected on the past 15 years and expressed gratitude for the characters she has portrayed and the audiences who have supported her throughout her career.

The actress said it felt surreal that her new drama was airing around the same time as Humsafar had debuted years earlier. She also highlighted how much her professional journey had changed while her connection with fans had remained constant.

Mahira rose to widespread fame through her portrayal of Khirad in Humsafar. The drama was based on Farhat Ishtiaq’s novel and starred Fawad Khan alongside Mahira.

The story followed cousins Khirad and Ashar, who enter an arranged marriage before facing separation, heartbreak and misunderstandings. The drama became a major success in Pakistan and gained a large audience internationally.

Humsafar is widely remembered as a major turning point for Pakistani television. Its popularity helped strengthen the reach of local dramas at a time when Indian and Turkish productions were also attracting Pakistani viewers.

The drama also transformed the careers of its leading cast and creative team. Mahira became one of Pakistan’s most recognisable actresses, while Fawad Khan gained popularity in India and later appeared in films including Khoobsurat, Kapoor & Sons and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

Director Sarmad Khoosat also went on to establish himself as a prominent filmmaker, later directing projects including Manto, Zindagi Tamasha and Lali.

Mahira has now returned to television with Mitti De Baway, a Punjab-set drama in which she stars opposite Wahaj Ali. The series has already attracted strong attention following its opening episodes.

The actress has also entered another major chapter of her personal life. Earlier this month, she announced that she is expecting her second child during an appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival.

With the Humsafar anniversary, the positive response to Mitti De Baway and her pregnancy announcement all arriving within the same period, the actress has plenty to celebrate.

For Mahira, the journey that began with Khirad continues with new characters, new milestones and the same loyal audience by her side.
