Pakistan’s Aashab Irfan wins bronze at Asian Games

NAGOYA: Pakistan’s Muhammad Aashab Irfan secured a bronze medal in the men’s singles squash event at the 20th Asian Games after losing his semifinal to India’s Abhay Singh in Nagoya, Japan.

The 22-year-old Pakistani, ranked 49th in the world, faced a difficult challenge against 28-year-old Singh, who is ranked 18th globally. The Indian player produced a dominant performance to defeat Aashab 3-0 at the Kinjō Futō Arena.

Singh controlled the semifinal from the opening game, winning 11-8, 12-10 and 11-6 to book his place in the final.

Despite the defeat, Aashab’s semifinal appearance earned Pakistan a place on the Asian Games squash podium and added another bronze medal to the country’s campaign in Nagoya.

The contest also produced a memorable display of sportsmanship after the match. Singh approached Aashab, shook hands with his Pakistani opponent and gave him a friendly pat on the back.

The Indian player later went over to the Pakistani contingent and greeted the players, creating a positive moment between the two sides after an intense sporting contest.

For Aashab, the bronze marks an important achievement on the Asian Games stage and adds to Pakistan’s growing medal tally at the ongoing event.

The medal is also Pakistan’s third bronze of the current Asian Games. The country had earlier secured bronze medals in mixed martial arts and women’s cricket.

Aashab’s run to the semifinal highlights Pakistan’s presence in Asian squash, while Singh’s victory puts him one step away from the gold medal.

The result means Aashab’s individual campaign has ended with a bronze, while Singh will now turn his attention to the final and the opportunity to fight for the Asian Games title.
