Trump supports Pakistan’s position on unprovoked Indian aggression

NEW YORK: US President Donald Trump has shared a video clip of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s address to the United Nations General Assembly, in which the Pakistani leader credited Trump with intervening during the 2025 Pakistan-India military confrontation.

Trump shared an 87-second excerpt of Sharif’s speech on his Truth Social account without adding a separate comment, according to reports.

The development came after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, where he recalled the military confrontation between Pakistan and India in May 2025.

In his address, Sharif described India’s military action as external aggression and said Pakistan had exercised its right to self-defence. He also praised the role of the Pakistani military leadership during the confrontation.

Sharif specifically thanked Trump for what he described as his “timely intervention”, saying the US president’s involvement helped prevent further escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

The Pakistani prime minister also credited Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for the military response, saying Pakistan’s armed forces responded with what he described as professionalism and capability.

Trump has repeatedly referred to his role in helping bring an end to the 2025 confrontation. During his own UN General Assembly address earlier this week, he again cited the Pakistan-India conflict among disputes he said his administration had helped resolve.

However, India has disputed Trump’s characterization of events. Indian officials have maintained that the pause in military action followed a request from Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations, rather than being the result of direct US mediation.

Beyond the 2025 conflict, Sharif used his UN speech to raise several issues concerning Pakistan’s relations with India. He warned that any attempt to stop, impede or divert Pakistan’s share of the Indus River waters would be treated as an “act of war.”

The remarks came amid continuing tensions over the Indus Waters Treaty, which India has placed in abeyance.

Sharif also highlighted Pakistan’s position on Kashmir and called for a peaceful resolution of outstanding disputes between the two countries. His address placed the Pakistan-India relationship prominently on the agenda as world leaders gathered in New York for the annual UN session.

Trump’s decision to share the Pakistani prime minister’s remarks has once again drawn attention to Washington’s claimed role in the 2025 confrontation and to the continuing diplomatic tensions between Pakistan and India.
