Two people were injured and several buildings and vehicles damaged in southern Saudi Arabia after debris from intercepted ballistic missiles launched by Yemen’s Houthi group fell in residential areas Saudi authorities said on Sunday.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) Civil Defence teams responded to incidents in Khamis Mushait and Ahad Rafidah governorates after the missiles were intercepted and destroyed. The falling debris damaged three residential buildings and seven vehicles. The injured included a Saudi citizen and an Asian resident.

The incident comes amid escalating hostilities between the Houthis and Saudi-led forces supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government.

Saudi coalition intercepts missiles and drones

The Saudi-led coalition said it had intercepted multiple Houthi projectiles targeting the kingdom. Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki reported that 10 ballistic missiles launched towards southern Saudi Arabia had been destroyed. Earlier announcements also referred to intercepted cruise missiles and drones targeting different parts of the country including the Riyadh region.

The Houthis did not immediately comment on the reported damage and injuries.

Meanwhile the group claimed responsibility for a series of operations involving missiles and drones aimed at Saudi airports oil facilities and military installations. Its announced targets included King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, oil infrastructure in Yanbu and Rabigh and other strategic sites.

The Houthis described their attacks as retaliation for Saudi airstrikes in Yemen, alleging that strikes had hit civilian locations in areas under their control. Saudi authorities and the coalition have continued reporting interceptions of incoming projectiles.

Riyadh airport issues passenger advisory

Amid the security situation King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh announced changes to terminal arrangements for domestic and international flights operated by Saudi carriers effective October 25.

Under the revised arrangements, Terminal 1 would handle domestic services while Terminal 2 would serve international flights operated by national airlines. Passengers were advised to contact their airlines to confirm flight details and reservation status before travelling.

The Houthis also issued warnings concerning the use of Riyadh’s airport describing it as unsafe and claiming it remained a military target.

Fighting continues across Yemen

Separately the Yemeni army said its forces had conducted hundreds of operations against Houthi positions over a 24-hour period reporting that 307 fighters and commanders had been neutralised and 68 military vehicles or weapons damaged or destroyed. The army did not provide a breakdown of those killed or wounded and the Houthis had not immediately responded.

The latest developments underline the growing risks to civilian areas transport infrastructure and regional security as missile and drone attacks continue alongside military operations in Yemen.
