UEFA has criticized FIFA after the governing body postponed the suspension of United States forward Folarin Balogun during the 2026 FIFA World Cup calling the move damaging to fairness and transparency in football.
According to reports, UEFA described FIFA’s decision as “extraordinary, incomprehensible and impossible to justify” arguing that inconsistent enforcement of the rules undermines both the credibility of the competition and the integrity of the sport.
Balogun was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for a dangerous challenge against Bosnia which was expected to rule him out of the quarter-final against Belgium.
However, after U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly requested FIFA President Gianni Infantino to reconsider the decision, FIFA delayed the enforcement of Balogun’s suspension for a one-year trial period while leaving the red card on his disciplinary record.
The decision has also drawn strong criticism from the Belgian Football Association which has reportedly filed a formal appeal with FIFA. The world governing body has not yet issued any further statement on the controversy.
