A United Nations Independent Commission of Inquiry has accused Israeli security forces of deliberately targeting Palestinian children during military operations in Gaza, describing the alleged actions as part of a broader pattern of grave violations against civilians.
According to the commission’s latest report, evidence indicates that Palestinian children have been specifically affected by Israeli military operations since the conflict intensified in October 2023. The report states that more than 20,000 Palestinian children have been killed and over 44,000 injured during the conflict.
The head of the commission said the impact of the war on children has been devastating, leaving long-lasting effects on their physical and psychological well-being. The report noted that many children have suffered trauma, lost family members, and seen their sense of security and future prospects severely damaged.
The inquiry also raised concerns about the treatment of Palestinian minors in Israeli detention facilities, alleging cases of torture, abuse, and other serious violations. It further claimed that some children remain unaccounted for and accused Israeli forces of using sexual violence as a means of intimidation and oppression.
The commission called on Israel to immediately halt actions that endanger Palestinian children and urged an end to its presence in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. It emphasized the need for accountability and stronger protections for children affected by the conflict.
Israel has rejected the findings, as it did with previous reports by the commission. The latest accusations come amid ongoing international scrutiny of the humanitarian situation in Gaza and growing calls for greater protection of civilians caught in the conflict.
