GUJRAT: The University of Gujrat (UoG) organized a two-day workshop on media literacy and digital rights at its Hafiz Hayat Campus, bringing together students, academics and experts to discuss the growing challenge of misinformation and responsible use of digital platforms.
The workshop was arranged by the Centre for Media & Communication Studies (CMCS) with support from the European Union and the Centre for Peace & Development Islamabad. The event focused on equipping students with practical skills to identify fake news, verify information and promote responsible social media engagement.
Speaking at the opening session, Dean Faculty of Arts Prof Dr Zahid Yousaf said the rapid flow of digital content had made it increasingly difficult to distinguish facts from falsehood.
“In today’s digital environment, journalism students must learn to depend on credible and verified sources,” he said, stressing the importance of professional standards in information sharing.
Workshop focal person Dr Muhammad Yousaf described misinformation, disinformation, fake news and deepfakes as some of the most pressing challenges facing modern societies.
“Responsible digital practice is no longer optional. It is essential in an age where misleading information can spread within minutes,” he said.
The workshop featured six sessions led by academics and specialists from different fields. Participants received training on fact-checking, critical thinking, ethical communication and the broader social impact of digital media.
Among the speakers were Prof Dr Sher Zaman, legal expert Farrukh Mushtaq Chaudhry, IT specialist Dr Safiullah and communication scholar Dr Faiza Bajwa.
Prof Dr Sher Zaman highlighted the effects of excessive screen time on mental and physical well-being, urging young people to adopt healthier digital habits.
“Responsible use of social media has become a necessity for the next generation,” he said.
Farrukh Mushtaq Chaudhry encouraged students to play a constructive role in society by promoting digital awareness and responsible online behavior.
“Educated youth can become ambassadors of digital literacy and help guide communities toward responsible use of online platforms,” he said.
Dr Safiullah discussed the influence of media on public opinion and emotions, noting that digital platforms can shape perceptions on a large scale.
“Positive storytelling can help rebuild trust and contribute to a healthier social environment,” he said.
Addressing issues of representation in digital spaces, Dr Faiza Bajwa emphasized the need for ethical communication and fair portrayal of marginalized groups.
“Women and minorities deserve respect in digital spaces. Ethical language and balanced representation are essential for inclusive communication,” she said.
The workshop concluded with certificate and shield distribution among participants. Students also presented group activities and projects reflecting the knowledge and skills they had gained during the sessions.
Organizers said media literacy is becoming increasingly important as societies around the world face growing challenges from misinformation, manipulated content and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes. They expressed hope that the training would help students become more informed digital citizens and responsible communicators.
