The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has officially registered two social media platforms, Bigo Live and Likee, in Pakistan under the name of Bigo Service Pakistan (Private) Limited.

According to an official statement issued by the PTA, the registration was carried out under the Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content Rules, 2021.

The authority said it aims to strengthen its cooperation with Bigo to improve online content monitoring, encourage responsible use of digital platforms and ensure compliance with Pakistani laws.

The PTA added that the official registration of major social media companies is an important step towards creating a safer and more responsible digital environment for users in the country.

What are Bigo Live and Likee?

Both platforms are popular among people who enjoy watching and creating online videos.  However they offer different features and ways to share content.

What is Bigo Live and how does it work?

Bigo Live is an international live streaming platform launched by Singapore based company Bigo Technology. According to the company, around 700,000 people worldwide use the platform. Google Play Store figures show that the app has been downloaded more than 50 million times.

Bigo Live allows users to broadcast live videos directly from their smartphones. They can show their talents through singing, gaming talk shows and casual conversations.

Viewers can interact with streamers by sending likes, comments and virtual gifts.  These gifts can later be converted into real money, making the platform a source of income for some content creators.

What is Likee and How does it work?

Likee is a short-video creation and sharing platform that works in a similar way to TikTok. It is operated by LikeeMe Private Limited.

According to Google Play Store figures, the app has been downloaded more than one billion times.

Users can create and share short videos, usually lasting between 15 and 60 seconds. The platform offers several editing tools, including filters, special effects music and augmented reality (AR) features.Likee is particularly popular among young users and short-video creators who use it for entertainment, creativity and sharing their content online.
