Heel pain is a common foot problem that can affect the inside back or sides of the heel. The severity and symptoms can vary from person to person.
The heel carries a lot of pressure during everyday activities. Too much physical activity repeated stress or an injury can sometimes lead to heel pain.
The human foot has 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and other structures. The heel bone is the largest bone in the foot.
Common causes of heel pain
There are several possible causes of heel pain. One of the most common is plantar fasciitis which can occur when the tissue that supports the foot becomes overstressed or irritated.
This may cause pain around the heel especially during certain movements.
An injury during exercise or other physical activities can also cause heel pain. Another possible cause is Achilles tendinitis.
It affects the Achilles tendon which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. Repeated stress or injury can cause pain and irritation in this area.
Sprains, joint problems and other conditions affecting the foot or ankle may also contribute to heel pain.
When should you see a doctor?
Medical advice may be needed if the heel pain is sudden or severe or if the area becomes red or swollen.
You should also see a doctor if the pain makes walking difficult or does not improve after two to three weeks of home care. A medical examination can help identify the underlying cause.
How to relieve mild heel pain at Home
•For mild heel pain some simple steps may help reduce discomfort.
•Rest your foot and avoid activities that make the pain worse.
•Avoid standing for long periods when possible.
•Apply an ice pack to the painful area for about 10 to 15 minutes, twice a day.
•Wear comfortable shoes that provide proper support.
•Keep the foot slightly raised while resting.
A common pain reliever may help when appropriate, but it is better to ask a doctor or pharmacist before using medicines regularly.
How can heel pain be prevented?
Wearing comfortable supportive shoes can help reduce unnecessary pressure on the heels. Shoes used for exercise should also be suitable for the activity.
Maintaining a healthy weight eating a balanced diet and giving your feet enough rest may also help reduce stress on the heels.
When starting exercise increase the intensity gradually instead of suddenly pushing your body harder. This may help lower the risk of injuries and foot problems
