TEHRAN/WASHINGTON: Iran has outlined what it describes as significant diplomatic and economic gains from the latest round of US-Iran negotiations held in Switzerland, saying the talks have laid the groundwork for a broader agreement on regional stability and sanctions relief.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s top negotiator, said the discussions produced “notable achievements” across several areas, including sanctions easing, oil-related arrangements, frozen assets, and regional security issues such as Lebanon and the Strait of Hormuz.

The high-level talks, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, concluded in Burgenstock, Switzerland on a positive note, with both US and Iranian officials acknowledging progress toward a potential final agreement. US Vice President JD Vance said the negotiations had established a “strong foundation” for a future deal, though he cautioned that further work was still required.

Frozen Assets and Financial Relief

According to Iranian officials, progress was made on the release and use of frozen Iranian funds abroad. Iran claims access has been secured for portions of blocked assets, which are expected to support humanitarian and essential imports. However, US officials have suggested conditions may apply regarding how these funds are utilized.

Temporary Sanctions Relief

Iran also pointed to a temporary easing of US sanctions allowing limited exports of Iranian oil and petrochemical products until August 21. Tehran views this step as an initial move toward broader economic normalization, while Washington has described it as a time-bound and conditional measure linked to ongoing compliance discussions.

Lebanon and Regional Coordination

On regional security, Ghalibaf said both sides agreed in principle to establish coordination mechanisms aimed at preventing escalation in Lebanon. The proposed framework is intended to manage disputes, reduce tensions, and support efforts to restore stability and sovereignty in conflict-affected areas.

Strait of Hormuz Discussions

Iran further emphasized discussions on maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting future arrangements may include coordination channels and communication systems to avoid misunderstandings in the strategic waterway.

Nuclear Issue Still Disputed

Despite reported progress, differences remain over Iran’s nuclear program. US officials indicated that international inspectors could return under a preliminary framework, while Iranian authorities rejected claims that any new nuclear commitments had been made.

Washington has continued to stress nuclear transparency and compliance, while Tehran insists its program remains peaceful and within sovereign rights.

Next Phase of Negotiations

Iranian officials said future talks will proceed under a structured framework involving a high-level committee and specialized working groups focusing on sanctions, nuclear issues, reconstruction, and implementation of the memorandum of understanding.
