What is the new tooth repair gel?

Tooth decay commonly known as cavities is one of the most common dental problems worldwide.

Dentists usually treat cavities by removing the damaged part of the tooth and filling the hole with a special material. Although this treatment is widely used it can sometimes be painful and may also affect healthy tooth tissue.

However dental treatment could change in the future. British researchers have developed a special gel that may help repair damaged tooth surfaces and restore some of their natural strength.

What is this new tooth repair gel?

Unlike bones and other body tissues tooth enamel cannot naturally grow back once it is damaged or lost.

According to a study published in the journal Nature Communications, the newly developed gel is based on a protein called amelogenin.

This protein plays an important role in the development of tooth enamel in young children. Researchers believe the gel could offer a new way to repair damaged teeth without relying entirely on traditional dental fillings.

How does the gel work?

The gel works by covering damaged areas of the teeth including small holes and cracks. It forms a thin but durable layer over the tooth surface.

According to the researchers, this layer uses minerals such as calcium and phosphate to encourage the growth of new crystals helping rebuild the damaged enamel.

The outer layer of a tooth known as enamel protects its softer inner parts from damage.  When this protective layer becomes weak or starts wearing away the risk of tooth decay and other dental problems increases.

Currently some special toothpastes and dental products can provide temporary protection, but traditional fillings remain a common treatment for cavities.

How long does the gel last?

Researchers say that the gel can remain on the teeth for several weeks after a single application.  However how long it lasts may depend on a person’s daily habits and oral hygiene.

They also explained that tooth enamel has a unique structure that protects teeth throughout life. The process activated by the new gel may help repair even areas that have suffered significant damage.
