Will Smith faces possible deposition in Jada Pinkett Smith lawsuit

Will Smith could soon become involved in the ongoing legal dispute between his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and his former friend, Bilaal Salaam, after new court filings revealed that Salaam wants the Hollywood star to testify under oath.

According to recently filed legal documents, Salaam has formally requested that Will Smith appear for a deposition as part of the lawsuit. An email dated July 7 shows Salaam’s legal team asking for the actor to be questioned regarding matters connected to the case.

Jada Pinkett Smith’s attorneys, however, opposed the request. They argued that there is no legal basis for Will Smith to be deposed because he is not a party to the lawsuit. The legal team also pointed out that the actor has not been served with a subpoena, meaning he is under no legal obligation to provide testimony at this stage of the proceedings.

The lawsuit was originally filed in December 2025 when Bilaal Salaam sued Jada Pinkett Smith, seeking $3 million in damages. In his complaint, Salaam alleged that Jada confronted and threatened him during an incident at a hotel in California in September 2021. He claims the encounter caused him significant harm and formed the basis of his legal action.

Jada Pinkett Smith has strongly denied all allegations made against her. Her legal team maintains that Salaam’s claims are without merit and has continued to challenge both the accusations and the evidence presented in court.

Earlier this year, the court ruled in Jada’s favor on a separate legal matter related to the case, ordering Salaam to pay nearly $33,000 toward her legal fees and litigation costs. The ruling was considered a procedural victory for the actress as the broader lawsuit continues.

In more recent court filings, Jada’s attorneys accused Salaam of failing to comply with discovery requirements. They argued that he has not produced key evidence needed for the case and asked the court to compel him to hand over audio recordings of conversations that may be relevant to the dispute.

Her lawyers have also requested that Salaam provide medical records supporting his claim of emotional distress. Salaam is seeking millions of dollars in damages, and Jada’s legal team argues that documentation is necessary to substantiate those claims.

The legal battle expanded further in May when Will Smith’s former wife, Sheree Zampino, filed her own lawsuit against Salaam. In her complaint, Zampino is seeking $1 million in damages, accusing Salaam of slander and intentional infliction of emotional distress. That separate lawsuit adds another layer to the growing legal conflict involving multiple parties connected to the Smith family.

For now, the court has not ordered Will Smith to testify, and it remains unclear whether Salaam will pursue a formal subpoena to secure his deposition. The issue could become a point of contention as the case moves forward.

The next court hearing in the lawsuit between Jada Pinkett Smith and Bilaal Salaam is scheduled to take place on August 19, when the parties are expected to address the latest legal motions and ongoing discovery disputes.
