A 30-year-old motorcyclist died in a tragic accident in Lahore’s Shadman area after reportedly being stopped at a checkpoint while the family of the deceased has alleged that authorities released his body after obtaining an undertaking that they would not pursue legal action.

According to reports a motorcycle rider accompanying a media professional was stopped by a police official at a checkpoint in Shadman on Tuesday. The motorcyclist identified as Zain Ilyas reportedly lost control of his bike and fell after the officer suddenly came onto the road to stop him.

The incident resulted in Zain suffering fatal injuries. The media professional accompanying him was also injured in the accident.

Zain’s body was taken into police custody following the incident. Police later completed the required legal and procedural formalities before handing the body over to his family.

Family sources, however, alleged that they were asked to sign an undertaking stating that they would not take legal action before the body was released to them. The family claimed that the condition was imposed as part of the process of handing over the deceased’s body.

Police authorities have denied the allegation maintaining that the body was handed over to the family after completion of the necessary legal procedures.

The incident has raised concerns over road safety, the conduct of traffic officials and the manner in which checkpoints are operated. Questions have also been raised about whether sudden attempts to stop motorcyclists on busy roads can increase the risk of serious accidents.

Meanwhile, Lahore Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) took disciplinary action against Traffic Warden Sultan-ul-Haq who had reportedly stopped Zain on the road. The traffic warden was suspended over allegations of negligence and carelessness in connection with the incident.

Zain’s funeral prayer was offered after Asr prayers in the Sanda area of Lahore. According to his family the deceased was married and worked as an electrician.
