17 killed, 15 wounded in South Africa tavern shooting

South African police have launched a search for suspects after a deadly shooting at a tavern in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg, left 17 people dead and 15 others injured.

The attack took place at around 9:30pm on Saturday in Gauteng province. Police said the victims included 13 men and four women. All 17 were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, the attackers were reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols. They allegedly opened fire on people gathered outside the tavern before entering the premises and continuing the shooting.

Fifteen other people suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately disclosed.

Authorities have not yet determined a motive for the attack. Police said no arrests had been made and a manhunt was underway to locate those responsible.

The shooting has added to concerns over gun violence in South Africa, where taverns and other entertainment venues have previously been targeted in deadly attacks. Police said investigations were continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify the suspects.
