The journey commenced at 9 o’clock as we boarded the bus, bidding farewell to Turbat. Initially, everything seemed familiar until Ormara, following the usual route from Turbat to Karachi. I could scarcely observe anything new except shattered glass remnants from car accidents and sluggish heavy vehicles. Around 2 o’clock, we reached Ormara, had our lunch, and resumed our journey towards our final destination. Sadly, I was not alert enough to notice the changes brought about by the devastating floods that struck Pakistan last year. However, my eyes widened as I beheld the ubiquitous trash and destruction.
The foremost thought that crossed my mind was the recklessness of humankind. We are the primary cause of pollution, evident from the pervasive plastic waste that covered every area, particularly the coastal regions. This environmental degradation could have a colossal impact on marine life. Therefore, it is crucial that we monitor our activities. If we cannot create a pristine and peaceful planet, we must refrain from making it filthy. All I could perceive was human irresponsibility, transforming minor destruction into deteriorating circumstances.
As we traveled further, I witnessed the lingering aftermath of the floods and the remnants of the previous disaster. Even after a year, the signboards still read “work under progress,” indicating a lack of improvement. The same dilapidated bridges persisted despite my frequent visits. It was disheartening, but without further delay, we continued our journey. By the grace of God, it concluded with the usual exhaustion and accompanying bodily discomfort from sitting in one position for hours. We arrived home at 7 o’clock, surprisingly early.
Overwhelmed by fatigue, I decided to take a nap instead of assisting with household chores. Upon waking up, my mother surprised me with some French fries to satiate my hunger. Her selflessness astounded me. Despite traveling together, she refused to rest and prepared a quick meal for us. It was remarkable to witness her unwavering care and concern, always seeking to bring happiness and good health to our lives. All these observations were simultaneously heart-wrenching, sympathetic, and endearing. However, they also left me despondent, as I realized that I, too, am a part of this planet, as is my family.
It is incumbent upon me to contribute and create a more conducive environment for a better future in our surroundings.
