Anne Hathaway has revealed that she initially misunderstood the story of her upcoming film Verity, expecting it to be a romantic comedy rather than a dark thriller.
The 43-year-old actress discussed the film while appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she spoke about working alongside Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett.
Hathaway admitted that she made an early assumption about the project because it was based on a novel by Colleen Hoover, whose work is widely associated with romance. She also expected director Michael Showalter to bring a humorous element to the adaptation.
The actress said she initially imagined the project as a romantic story with comedy woven into it. However, her expectations changed dramatically once she read the screenplay.
Instead of a light romance, Hathaway discovered a much darker plot involving murder, deception, disturbing characters and a web of secrets.
Despite the unexpected storyline, the actress decided to take on the role because she was touched that Showalter had specifically considered her for the part of Verity Crawford.
Based on Hoover’s novel, Verity follows a writer who becomes entangled in a troubling situation filled with secrets and revelations. The film is scheduled to hit theatres on October 2.
