Veteran Indian actor Anupam Kher has responded after an old video of fellow actor Naseeruddin Shah resurfaced on social media, reigniting discussion over remarks made about him several years ago.
The viral clip shows Shah referring to Kher as a “clown” while criticising his outspoken public views. In the video, Shah says Kher should not be taken seriously and describes him as someone with a tendency to support those in power. He also claims that many of their former colleagues from the National School of Drama (NSD) and the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) would share his opinion.
The clip began circulating widely again shortly after Kher’s recent comments about the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya attracted attention online, leading to fresh debate across social media platforms.
Responding through a video message, Kher suggested that the renewed circulation of the old clip was an attempt to create a negative perception of him because of his recent statements. He said that after his remarks about Ayodhya drew criticism, some people searched for material that could be used against him and eventually revived a video that was already several years old.
Kher stressed that the resurfaced clip was not new and pointed out that he had already addressed it when it first appeared years ago. He added that he had no intention of revisiting the controversy, saying he preferred to focus on his work rather than engage in repeated public disputes.
The actor also clarified that there is no personal animosity between him and Shah despite their ideological differences. According to Kher, the two actors have met on several occasions, greeted each other respectfully and maintained cordial relations over the years. He said professional disagreements should not be mistaken for personal hostility.
Reflecting on his journey in the film industry, Kher said every milestone in his career had been achieved through hard work, discipline and determination. He credited his success to years of perseverance and said criticism would not shake his confidence or alter his beliefs.
Speaking about his recent visit to Ayodhya, Kher described the experience as deeply spiritual and inspiring. He said the atmosphere at the Ram Mandir strengthened his resolve to express his views honestly, regardless of criticism or online backlash.
Ending his message on a positive note, Kher recalled advice from his late father, saying insults only have power if a person chooses to accept them. He said he harbours no resentment towards his critics, wished them well, and added that he remains focused on his ongoing film commitments while continuing to enjoy his stay in Ayodhya.
