Educational institutions across Peshawar will remain open on Tuesday according to an announcement issued by the deputy commissioner (DC) of the provincial capital.
In a statement shared on Facebook the district administration urged residents to disregard false notifications and unverified reports suggesting that schools and other educational institutions would remain closed.
Educational institutions across Peshawar were shut on Monday amid road blockades and heightened security following the imposition of governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The latest announcement clarifies the administration’s position regarding educational activities on Tuesday.
Police personnel remained deployed at various locations throughout the city with a stronger security presence reported near areas marking the beginning of the Cantonment limits.
Meanwhile, the district administration has introduced additional restrictions to maintain law and order. Under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) a ban on public gatherings has been imposed in Peshawar for seven days.
The restrictions also prohibit the public display of weapons and the possession of items that could potentially be used to cause violence. These include spikes, ball bearings, loaded batons, petrol bombs and other potentially dangerous objects.
The security measures follow the federal government’s decision on Sunday to impose governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and declare an emergency in 12 districts. The federal government cited security concerns and alleged a lack of cooperation from the provincial administration, which is no longer functioning under the previous arrangement.
Political tensions between the federal government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led provincial government had intensified in the days leading up to the decision.
The disagreement initially centred on PTI’s planned march to Islamabad, which the party intended to use to demand the release of its founder Imran Khan. The dispute later expanded after the federal government accused the provincial administration of failing to cooperate adequately in counterterrorism efforts.
With educational institutions scheduled to operate on Tuesday residents have been advised to rely on official announcements rather than circulate unverified information. Security arrangements and restrictions remain in place as authorities seek to maintain order across the provincial capital.
Parents, students, and teachers are encouraged to follow updates issued by the relevant district authorities regarding any further changes.
