Asim Iftikhar pledges stronger role in Makkah Agreement

Pakistan’s newly appointed Foreign Secretary Asim Iftikhar has said the country is taking on additional responsibilities under the Makkah Agreement as regional tensions continue to move in a negative direction.

Speaking in New York, Iftikhar acknowledged the worsening situation and said Pakistan was fully aware of the challenges confronting the region.

“We recognise that the situation is moving in a negative direction, and we understand that we have to play a role,” he said.

The foreign secretary said the Makkah Agreement involves all three countries and aims to promote peace, stability and cooperation in the region. He stressed that Pakistan was prepared to contribute to efforts aimed at preventing further escalation and addressing emerging challenges.

Iftikhar said Islamabad’s priority was to support a peaceful resolution of the dispute through diplomatic means. He emphasised that any settlement should be reached in accordance with international law and the principles and framework of the United Nations.

He said Pakistan would continue its diplomatic efforts to encourage dialogue and help create conditions conducive to regional peace and stability.

The foreign secretary’s remarks reflect Pakistan’s intention to play a more active role in resolving regional disputes and supporting efforts aimed at de-escalation. Islamabad has consistently maintained that lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue, diplomacy and respect for international law.
