Bilawal Bhutto’s reported Europe wedding sparks buzz, spokesman breaks silence

KARACHI: Rumours surrounding the engagement and possible marriage of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari have triggered fresh speculation, prompting his spokesman to publicly reject reports circulating in the media.

The reports claimed that President Asif Ali Zardari, Bilawal’s father, had travelled to the European microstate of Liechtenstein to discuss or finalise a marriage proposal for his son.

According to the reports, Zardari was allegedly accompanied by other members of the family and had travelled to the country to discuss arrangements and potentially settle a date for Bilawal’s marriage.

The reports further claimed that the prospective bride was from Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, and that the wedding could take place towards the end of this year.

However, the claims were strongly rejected by Murtaza Wahab, Karachi mayor and spokesman for PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

In a post on social media platform X, Wahab said reports regarding Bilawal’s engagement or marriage were false and baseless, effectively putting an end to the speculation for now.

The clarification came after the marriage reports gained attention on social media and in sections of the Pakistani media, where details about the alleged proposal and the Zardari family’s purported visit to Liechtenstein were widely discussed.

Liechtenstein, a small landlocked European country situated between Switzerland and Austria, is known for its Alpine landscape and capital, Vaduz. The country’s mention in the reports added an unusual international twist to the speculation surrounding the PPP chairman’s personal life.

Bilawal, who was born in 1988, is the son of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and President Asif Ali Zardari. He has led the PPP since 2007 and remains one of Pakistan’s prominent political figures. Official National Assembly records currently list him as an elected member representing NA-194, Larkana-I.

His political activities have continued in recent months, with official records and government statements showing him engaged in parliamentary and political matters.

For now, however, there appears to be no confirmed engagement or wedding announcement from Bilawal or his family.

Wahab’s statement has therefore shifted the story from wedding speculation back to the facts: “the reported engagement and marriage claims remain unconfirmed and have been explicitly denied by Bilawal’s spokesman.”
