Body found in landing gear after Japan-to-Malaysia flight

KUALA LUMPUR: A disturbing discovery at Kuala Lumpur International Airport has left airport staff and authorities investigating after the body of an unidentified person was reportedly found inside the landing-gear compartment of a flight arriving from Tokyo, Japan.

The aircraft had departed from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport and landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at around 6:30am on Thursday, according to reports.

Airport personnel reportedly became suspicious after detecting a strong and unusual odour from the aircraft. A subsequent inspection of the landing-gear compartment led to the discovery of human remains.

The person has not yet been identified, and authorities are investigating how the individual managed to enter the aircraft’s wheel compartment and where the journey began.

Initial reports suggest the body may have remained inside the compartment for an extended period. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft’s previous flight routes, airport security footage and access records as part of the inquiry.

Travelling inside an aircraft’s landing-gear bay is extremely dangerous. The compartment is not designed for passengers and is exposed to extremely cold temperatures, limited oxygen and severe mechanical hazards during take-off, flight and landing.

Aviation experts have repeatedly warned that people attempting to hide in aircraft wheel wells face a high risk of hypothermia, hypoxia and fatal injuries.

The discovery has prompted authorities to begin a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Officials are also expected to determine whether the person entered the aircraft deliberately as a stowaway or gained access under circumstances that remain unclear.

The incident has drawn renewed attention to airport security and the risks faced by people attempting to travel secretly aboard aircraft.
