Carney briefly became the favorite on Kalshi, a U.S.-based prediction market, for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on Monday, with traders putting his chances at 14%. His odds later fell, underscoring the speculative nature of such markets.

There is no public evidence that Carney is on the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s shortlist. The committee does not disclose the names of current nominees, and the 2026 Peace Prize is due to be announced on Oct. 9 in Oslo.

Carney and Trump are locked in an escalating trade dispute involving U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods and Canadian retaliation. Trump has repeatedly said he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize and has complained about not receiving it.

Nelson Wiseman, professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, said a Nobel award for Carney could further strain relations between Ottawa and Washington.

“Trump will be unhappy whoever gets the Nobel,” Wiseman said. “If Carney got it, it would make relations with Canada rockier than they are.”

Carney has also been mentioned in speculation about TIME’s Person of the Year award. TIME named him one of its 100 most influential people of 2026, noting his increased popularity as he stood up to Trump.

On Tuesday, Carney was the second choice on major prediction markets for TIME’s Person of the Year, behind New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, according to AP. The winner is scheduled to be announced on Dec. 10.

Carney’s international profile grew after a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January in which he urged middle powers to work together rather than wait for the restoration of the previous international order. His speech received a standing ovation.

He has since sought closer ties with Europe and partners in Asia, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed opening the door for Canada to become the European Union’s first associate member.

New York University professor Scott Galloway predicted that Carney would be named TIME’s Person of the Year, calling him “the leader that Europe’s been looking for for the last 20 years.”

Neither the Nobel Peace Prize nor TIME’s Person of the Year has been decided publicly, and prediction-market odds and individual forecasts do not establish who will receive either award.
