Christine Taylor recalls embarrassing demand from The Brady Bunch creators

Christine Taylor is looking back at one of the more uncomfortable demands she faced while preparing to play Marcia Brady in The Brady Bunch Movie.

The actress, who portrayed the iconic character in the 1995 comedy and its 1996 sequel A Very Brady Sequel, recently revealed that she was asked to lose 10 pounds for the role. Taylor described the request as embarrassing and a reflection of how different Hollywood was during the 1990s. 

Taylor opened up about the experience during an appearance on the Office Ladies podcast with Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey. She explained that she was already a huge fan of the original The Brady Bunch and felt a strong connection to Marcia long before being cast.

Her journey to the movie began with The Real Live Brady Bunch, a stage production in which she played Marcia. Her performance eventually caught the attention of original Brady Bunch creator Sherwood Schwartz, who contacted her and invited her to meet.

For Taylor, the opportunity felt almost unbelievable. She had grown up watching the original series and knew Marcia’s mannerisms and personality extremely well. She even brought small details from the television character into her audition and performance because she wanted the portrayal to feel authentic rather than simply make fun of the beloved series. 

But after landing the role, Taylor received an unexpected request.

The actress recalled being told to lose 10 pounds despite saying she was “not a super heavy person.” She admitted that she felt embarrassed when the request was made, although she ultimately agreed because she wanted the part so badly.

Taylor also emphasized that the entertainment industry was operating under very different standards at the time. She believes such a demand would not happen today in the same way, but said that actresses being asked to lose weight for roles was common in Hollywood during that era. 

Interestingly, Taylor said the weight change can actually be noticed throughout the movie. Because of reshoots and the length of the production, she eventually regained some of the weight. She jokingly recalled enjoying frozen yogurt with plenty of sprinkles after filming.

Despite the uncomfortable experience, Taylor has no regrets about playing Marcia. At just 23, she embraced the role of the teenage Brady daughter and became one of the most memorable parts of the movie.

Her performance ultimately helped create one of the franchise’s most recognizable moments: Marcia’s famous “Sure, Jan” exchange, which later became a lasting pop-culture meme.
