GUJRANWALA: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif visited the residence of former MNA Chaudhry Mahmood Bashir Virk in Gujranwala on Friday and offered condolences to his family over his death.

The chief minister met the late PML-N leader’s wife, son Rashid Bashir Virk, daughters and other family members and offered Fateha for the deceased.
Maryam Nawaz paid tribute to Mahmood Bashir Virk’s political and public services, describing him as a loyal companion of PML-N president Nawaz Sharif and a respected elder for party workers in Gujranwala.

She said Virk’s services to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz would always be remembered, adding that he had remained associated with the party through difficult as well as favourable periods.

“Mahmood Bashir Virk was a respected elder and valuable asset for the people and workers of Gujranwala,” she said.
The chief minister expressed the hope that his son Rashid Bashir Virk would carry forward his father’s political legacy.
She also said the loss of parents could never be fully compensated and prayed for the departed soul and for patience for the bereaved family.

Rashid Bashir Virk thanked the chief minister for visiting the family during their difficult time. He said the support extended by Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz would remain memorable for the family.
Mahmood Bashir Virk, a veteran PML-N politician and former federal law minister, died earlier in September. He had represented Gujranwala in the National Assembly and was serving as chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Law and Justice at the time of his death.

Following the condolence visit, Maryam Nawaz also met members of the National and Provincial Assembly, ticket-holders and other PML-N leaders from Gujranwala.
The chief minister met party leaders individually and inquired about their well-being as well as the political and organisational situation in the district.

She also asked the elected representatives and party leaders about issues being faced by their constituencies and exchanged views with them.
The meeting provided an opportunity for local party leaders and elected representatives to present their concerns and suggestions to the chief minister.

The chief minister’s visit came at a time when the PML-N is preparing for political activity in Gujranwala following the death of Mahmood Bashir Virk. The NA-77 seat, which he represented, has subsequently been scheduled for a by-election on November 8.
