United States – Iran’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign ended in the group stage but a controversial refereeing decision against the team has raised questions about the tournament’s fairness.
Despite facing difficult circumstances, including travel complications and restrictions on staying in the United States, Iran remained unbeaten in the group stage drawing all three of its matches.
However, against Egypt, Iran saw what appeared to be a winning goal ruled out after a controversial VAR decision, resulting in a 1-1 draw and ending the team’s World Cup journey.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media showing Iran’s second goal being disallowed by the referee.
The match in Seattle was level at 1-1 until stoppage time, when Iran scored what seemed to be the winning goal. The stadium erupted in celebration and Iranian players celebrated on the pitch. Moments later, however, their celebrations turned to disappointment after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ruled the goal offside.
Social media users have questioned the decision after viral footage appeared to show another Egyptian defender positioned slightly ahead of the player used as the reference point for the offside call. Iranian fans and football supporters have criticized the VAR decision and raised concerns over its accuracy.
Earlier in the tournament, Iran’s captain had also complained about travel difficulties and the lack of facilities in the United States saying, “If they want to eliminate Iran from the tournament, then do it—but this is not justice for us.”
