Counter-terror police investigate major incident near RAF Fairford in UK

Counter-terrorism police are leading an investigation into a major security incident near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, after several men were arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act.

Several properties in the nearby village of Whelford have been evacuated following the arrests. An Army specialist explosive ordnance disposal team has been deployed to examine a number of vehicles, while a police cordon remains in place.

Gloucestershire Police declared a major incident and said the operation was being conducted with partner agencies. Residents affected by the evacuation have been moved to a nearby leisure centre.

A significant emergency response has been reported in the area, including armed police, ambulances, fire crews and specialist emergency teams. Police have said they believe the incident is contained and have urged members of the public to avoid the affected area.

Counter-terrorism officers are now leading the investigation. Police have not disclosed the identities of those arrested or established publicly whether RAF Fairford itself was the intended target. ITV reported that the police operation was not intelligence-led, meaning investigators had not previously identified a potential plot.

RAF Fairford is an important military airbase in Gloucestershire and hosts operations by the United States Air Force. The base has recently been used by US forces during military operations involving Iran.
