Spain shock England 3-2 at Wembley, extend unbeaten run to 39

London: Spain produced another memorable comeback at Wembley, defeating England 3-2 in an entertaining Nations League clash to extend their unbeaten streak to a record 39 matches for a European team.

The world champions appeared in control during the opening stages, with teenage star Lamine Yamal quickly capitalising on a defensive error by Marc Guehi. Yamal stole possession and curled an effort against the inside of the post, giving England an early warning.

Spain continued to threaten, with Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo both going close as England struggled to contain the visitors.

However, England gradually found their rhythm and turned the game around before half-time. Anthony Gordon finished a well-worked attacking move in the 36th minute after receiving a pass from Jude Bellingham.

Just four minutes later, England moved ahead. Captain Harry Kane rose to meet Nico O’Reilly’s cross, with the ball taking a deflection off Marc Cucurella before finding the net.

England had a golden opportunity to strengthen their position early in the second half when they were awarded a penalty after a VAR review for Rodri’s foul on Bellingham. Kane stepped up but slipped slightly as he struck the ball, sending his effort against the crossbar.

That miss proved costly.

Spain responded strongly, with substitute Alex Baena scoring in the 60th minute after England lost possession. The visitors then completed their comeback when Baena turned provider for Mikel Oyarzabal, who calmly lifted the ball over goalkeeper James Trafford.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised his team’s resilience and said he believed his players could have recovered even if England had extended their lead.

Kane admitted England again struggled to maintain their best performance for the entire match.

The victory further strengthens Spain’s remarkable recent record. They will next face Croatia in Nations League Group A3, while England travel to the Czech Republic.

For England, the defeat will raise questions about their ability to protect leads against top opposition. For Spain, another comeback added yet another chapter to their extraordinary unbeaten run.
