Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal return is in his own hands, Coach says

LISBON: Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to the Portugal national team remains entirely his decision, head coach Jorge Jesus has said, keeping the door open for the legendary forward despite his recent departure from the squad.

The 41-year-old Ronaldo recently stepped away from Portugal’s Nations League camp after being left among the substitutes against Norway and subsequently informed that he would not start against Denmark.

Following the developments, Ronaldo said on social media that he would explain to the Portuguese public, at the appropriate time, why he decided to leave the national team.

Jesus, who has previously coached Ronaldo at Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, said he would like the veteran forward to decide how and when his international career ends.

According to the coach, Ronaldo remains an important figure for Portugal, but the final call on whether he returns belongs to the five-time Ballon d’Or winner himself.

Ronaldo has enjoyed an extraordinary international career, making 234 appearances and scoring 146 goals for Portugal — both world records.

He has also played a key role in Portugal’s major international successes, helping the country win the Euro 2016 title and two UEFA Nations League trophies.

With Ronaldo yet to announce a definitive retirement from international football, his next move could become one of the biggest talking points surrounding Portugal’s national team.
