Duchess Sophie shines at Ella Mountbatten’s royal wedding

Duchess Sophie brought elegance and warmth to the wedding of Ella Mountbatten, appearing at the joyful royal celebration in a striking pink floral dress.

The Duchess of Edinburgh joined her husband, Prince Edward, at the special occasion as Ella married insurance broker Fergus Wright. The wedding brought together around 200 guests and took place at St Luke’s Church in Milland, West Sussex.

Prince Edward also had an important role during the ceremony as he was invited to sign the marriage register.

Sophie looked stylish and sophisticated in a soft pink dress decorated with delicate floral patterns in shades of red, orange, black and cream. The flowing design and modest cut gave her a graceful appearance that suited the formal wedding setting.

Ella, the daughter of King Charles’ cousin Lord Ivar Mountbatten, embraced a modern approach to her wedding while also keeping some traditional elements. She looked stunning in a bespoke ivory silk-satin gown by Ella May London.

The dress featured a structured corseted bodice, a full skirt and a long sweeping train, creating a classic bridal look with a contemporary touch.

The bride also broke with traditional wedding customs by giving a speech during the reception. Traditionally, speeches at weddings have often been associated with the father of the bride, groom and best man.

Ella used her speech to thank the people who had supported her throughout her life and helped make the wedding day possible.

“When else are you going to get all your favourite people in one place to say thanks for all the effort that everyone put in?” she said.

She also spoke warmly about having her godparents present, describing their attendance as something that meant a great deal to her.

Ella’s relationship with Fergus began in an unexpected way during the coronavirus pandemic. The couple had become housemates in Clapham, south London, after graduating from university.

Ella studied at the University of Bristol, while Fergus attended the University of Edinburgh. At the time, Ella had planned to move to New York after securing a job on Wall Street. However, those plans were cancelled because of the pandemic.

Living together eventually brought the pair closer, and their friendship developed into a relationship before they decided to marry.

During her wedding speech, Ella also paid tribute to her family, including her parents, Lord Ivar Mountbatten and events manager Penny Mountbatten.

Her parents married in 1993 and separated in 2010 after 17 years together. They divorced the following year but have continued to maintain a close and friendly relationship.

The wedding offered a memorable celebration for the Mountbatten family, bringing together relatives, friends and members of the royal family for Ella and Fergus’ new chapter.

With her elegant bridal gown, heartfelt speech and modern approach to tradition, Ella created a wedding that reflected both her personality and her close connection with family and friends.
