Ed Sheeran hit by Macklemore tour fallout

Ed Sheeran is facing growing criticism and an unexpected crisis surrounding his US stadium tour after rapper Macklemore was removed from the lineup following comments he made on stage in support of Palestinians.

The controversy has placed Sheeran, who has generally maintained a carefully neutral public image, at the centre of a heated debate over the Israel-Palestine conflict, free speech and the responsibilities of major artists.

Macklemore had been performing as an opening act on Sheeran’s US tour. During his performances, the rapper expressed support for Palestine and referred to the deaths in Gaza as genocide, a description rejected by Israel. His remarks triggered criticism from pro-Israel groups and reportedly created pressure on Sheeran and the tour’s promoters to remove him from the shows.

Sheeran later said the decision to drop Macklemore had been made by the promoters rather than by him. He said he had attempted to find a way forward between the different sides but was unsuccessful.

In a statement, Sheeran said he was deeply distressed by the conflict and described the suffering of civilians on both sides as a human tragedy. He also explained his decision to generally avoid political issues publicly, saying his concerts are attended by people from different backgrounds, including children.

The explanation, however, drew criticism from some commentators who pointed to previous occasions when Sheeran had publicly supported social and political causes. His past involvement in campaigns and benefit events has led some critics to question his claim that he generally avoids politics.

The controversy intensified after the remaining support acts on his US tour withdrew. Finneas, Aaron Rowe and Lukas Graham announced that they would no longer perform on the remaining dates, while Beoga, the musicians who had accompanied Sheeran on several songs, also departed.

Several of those who withdrew expressed support for Macklemore and raised concerns about the impact of the decision on artistic expression and freedom of speech.

Music industry figures have also questioned whether Sheeran could have taken a stronger position. Critics argue that, as one of the world’s most successful musicians, he had significant influence over the tour and could have challenged the promoters’ decision.

Others have taken a more cautious view, arguing that Sheeran was placed in a difficult position. Cancelling performances in protest could have been interpreted as an endorsement of Macklemore’s political statements, while continuing the tour without him has attracted criticism from those who believe the rapper was removed for expressing his views.

The episode has therefore created a difficult situation for Sheeran’s longstanding “everyman” and non-confrontational public persona. His attempt to remain outside the political debate has instead drawn him directly into one of the most divisive international issues.

Despite the controversy, the immediate impact on his concerts remains uncertain. Sheeran has previously performed largely as a solo artist, using a loop pedal rather than depending heavily on a large backing band, meaning the departure of some musicians may not prevent the remaining shows from going ahead.

Sheeran is scheduled to continue his US tour before the current run concludes in Mexico in December. His next performances are expected to receive heightened attention as fans and critics assess how he handles the fallout from the dispute.
