Evangeline Lilly has opened up about her decision to leave Hollywood, revealing that she has never enjoyed being famous and would rather live a quieter life away from the entertainment industry’s constant attention.
The 47-year-old actress, best known for her roles in Lost and Marvel’s Ant-Man franchise, discussed her departure from acting during a recent interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network, published on Monday, October 19. Lilly explained that fame was never something she truly desired, despite the success and recognition she achieved throughout her career.
“I’d much prefer a quieter position,” Lilly said, admitting that she had always disliked being famous and had never attempted to hide her feelings about the spotlight.
The actress described fame as a price performers often have to pay in exchange for the financial rewards their careers provide. Although acting brought her professional success and opportunities, she suggested that the attention accompanying celebrity life was something she never found particularly appealing.
Health concerns influenced her retirement
Lilly has considered herself retired from acting since 2020, although her decision attracted widespread attention in June 2024. At the time, she shared a video recorded in 2006 in which she discussed her long-term ambitions, including stepping away from Hollywood to raise a family and dedicate herself to humanitarian work.
Reflecting on her decision, Lilly revealed that serious health concerns also contributed to her departure from the entertainment industry.
By the time she retired, the actress said she had developed significant chronic health problems that she associated with the physical and emotional demands of acting. Her comments offered further insight into why she chose to prioritise her personal well-being over continuing a successful career in film.
However, leaving Hollywood was not necessarily an easy decision. Lilly acknowledged experiencing moments of fear about giving up the influence, financial security, recognition and public approval that came with her profession.
Despite those concerns, she eventually found comfort in her faith and the belief that her life could follow a different direction.
Faith helped her embrace a quieter life
Lilly explained that her relationship with God helped her accept the uncertainty of leaving behind a familiar career and encouraged her to trust the future.
She described the experience as liberating, saying she had found peace in believing that God’s plan for her life did not have to revolve around fame, money, wealth or power.
Her comments reflect a significant change in priorities for an actress who spent years working in one of the world’s most competitive entertainment industries.
Before entering the acting profession, Lilly studied political science and international relations. She had also considered pursuing a career as a missionary, humanitarian worker or diplomat, reflecting her longstanding interest in making a positive difference in the world.
The actress said she wanted to contribute to improving people’s lives and highlighted her 22 years of hands-on humanitarian work in Rwanda as an important part of that commitment.
Although Lilly continues to appreciate storytelling, she suggested that her creative ambitions may now take a different form. Rather than appearing in front of the camera, she would prefer to develop and tell stories of her own.
She has not completely ruled out returning to acting in the future, leaving open the possibility of another appearance on screen if the right opportunity comes along.
Her latest projects and health challenges
Lilly’s last live-action appearance was in the 2023 Marvel film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, in which she reprised her role as Hope van Dyne, also known as the Wasp.
She has also contributed her voice to the animated film Legend of Destruction, which explores the Jewish revolt against Roman rule.
Outside her professional life, the actress has faced additional health challenges. Reports last year indicated that she suffered a traumatic brain injury after fainting on a Hawaiian beach and striking a boulder during the fall. In early 2026, she also spoke about the financial burden of covering her medical treatment.
Lilly’s latest reflections make clear that stepping away from Hollywood was about more than simply ending an acting career. For her, the decision represented an opportunity to prioritise her health, faith, family and humanitarian interests while exploring a life beyond celebrity culture.
