A court in South Korea has sentenced former First Lady Kim Keon Hee to seven years in prison after finding her guilty in a high-profile bribery case that has shaken the country’s political establishment.

The Seoul Central District Court ruled that Kim accepted luxury gifts and valuable items in exchange for political influence and favours during and after her husband’s presidency.

The court imposed a prison sentence of seven years and fined her 64.8 million won, equivalent to about $42,000. Judges also ordered the confiscation of the gifts and assets linked to the case.

According to court findings, Kim received expensive jewellery, designer accessories and other luxury items from business figures and individuals seeking assistance in obtaining government appointments and favourable decisions.

The ruling stated that the former first lady used her position and influence to facilitate jobs and business opportunities for individuals connected to those who provided the gifts.

Kim rejected the allegations throughout the trial, insisting that the items were personal gifts rather than bribes. Her legal team announced plans to challenge the verdict through the appeals process.

The latest conviction adds to Kim’s existing legal troubles, as she is already serving a prison sentence handed down earlier this year in a separate case involving financial misconduct and corruption allegations.

The scandal has also intensified scrutiny of former president Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office following impeachment proceedings in 2025 and is facing legal consequences in separate cases linked to his administration.

The convictions mark one of the most significant political corruption cases in South Korea in recent years and have renewed debate over accountability and influence within the country’s highest offices.
