ISLAMABAD: Experts have advised consumers to avoid storing certain commonly used foods in the refrigerator, saying that low temperatures can affect their texture, taste and quality and, in some cases, may accelerate deterioration.
According to food storage guidance, several everyday items are generally better kept outside the refrigerator at room temperature, provided they are stored in suitable conditions.
Tomatoes can lose their flavour
Tomatoes may lose some of their natural flavour and texture when exposed to refrigerator temperatures. The cold environment can affect their texture, making them softer and reducing their natural sweetness and aroma.
Experts recommend keeping tomatoes at room temperature away from direct sunlight. Once tomatoes have been cut, however, they should be placed in the refrigerator to maintain their freshness and reduce the risk of spoilage.
Potatoes can become sweeter and grainy
Storing potatoes in the refrigerator can cause some of their starch to convert into sugar. As a result, refrigerated potatoes may develop an unusually sweet taste and a slightly grainy texture, particularly after cooking.
Potatoes are generally better stored in a cool, dark and dry place with adequate ventilation. A kitchen basket or paper bag can be suitable for storage. They should preferably be kept separately from onions.
Onions and garlic need a dry environment
Whole onions can become soft and develop mould more easily when exposed to the moisture commonly found inside refrigerators. Garlic can also begin to sprout and may develop a rubbery texture when refrigerated.
Both onions and garlic are generally better kept in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area. However, once they have been peeled or cut, they should be transferred to a sealed container and stored in the refrigerator.
Refrigerating bread can make it stale faster
Bread is another food item that may not benefit from refrigeration. Low temperatures can speed up the process that causes bread to become dry and hard.
For short-term storage, bread can be kept at room temperature in a bread box or a properly sealed bag. If bread needs to be stored for a longer period, freezing it is generally considered a better option than keeping it in the refrigerator.
Bananas can be affected by cold temperatures
Bananas can also react poorly to refrigeration. Low temperatures may cause their peels to turn dark, while the fruit inside can become softer.
For better quality, bananas are generally best kept at room temperature until they reach the desired level of ripeness.
Coffee can absorb odours and moisture
Coffee beans and ground coffee may also lose quality when stored in the refrigerator. Coffee can absorb odours from other foods and may also be affected by moisture, potentially changing its aroma and taste.
Experts recommend storing coffee in a cool, dry place at room temperature, preferably in an airtight container away from heat, light and moisture.
Making small changes to food-storage habits can help preserve the taste and texture of commonly used foods while also creating additional space in the refrigerator.
However, consumers should always check the storage instructions provided on food packaging. Sauces and other opened products may require refrigeration after opening, depending on their ingredients and the manufacturer’s instructions.
