The FBI is preparing to search two storage units in Los Angeles rented by Thomas Markle, the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, after his son disclosed their locations to investigators.
The reported development follows investigations in the Philippines and Mexico into allegations that material depicting child sexual abuse was found among belongings associated with Markle Sr. He has denied the allegations.
The Daily Mail reported that the Los Angeles units, which Markle has allegedly rented for about 15 years, are expected to be searched for possible child sexual abuse material. The FBI has not publicly confirmed the reported search in the information available for this story.
Thomas Markle Jr told The Sun that his father had informed him about the two units years ago. He said one contained Meghan’s old furniture, while the other held boxes, books, photographs and memorabilia from his father’s Hollywood career, as well as items from Meghan’s college years.
“There’s something there, that’s my gut feeling, I dread to think what the FBI might find,” he told the newspaper.
Markle Jr said his father had previously travelled from Mexico to Los Angeles to visit the units, but had cancelled several planned trips.
“We tried to do this several times but he cancelled every time. At that point I never really thought anything of it,” he said.
He also said family members had offered to collect and pack up the belongings, but his father had refused. Markle Jr said he had visited the storage facility once with his father but had waited in the lobby rather than entering either unit.
Markle Jr said he continued to receive receipts showing that about $700 was being charged each month for the two units. He said he eventually disclosed their existence to investigators after alleged material was found in a storage unit in Mexico.
“I think it’s important the FBI searches the LA units as soon as possible. The more I’m learning about my dad, the more I am deeply shocked,” he told The Sun.
Thomas Markle Sr has previously denied allegations against him, describing them as lies. The allegations remain under investigation, and the reported plan to search the Los Angeles units does not establish that they contain illegal material.
