FCC urges government to return historic Ewing Hall

Forman Christian College expresses deep concern over the takeover of its historic building and calls for dialogue to protect a landmark tied to Lahore’s educational and cultural heritage

Forman Christian College (FCC) has raised serious concern over the recent takeover of Ewing Hall. The building is one of its most historic properties in Lahore’s Anarkali area. In response, the university administration called the move deeply distressing. It also urged authorities to reconsider the decision. Moreover, it stressed the need to protect the heritage value of the landmark.

According to FCC, Ewing Hall has been part of the institution’s history for more than a century. First, the college secured its lease in 1915. After that, it renewed the lease several times. Meanwhile, the most recent agreement reportedly extended it into the 2040s. As a result, the institution continued using the building for academic and administrative work.

University officials said they received sudden information about the building’s future earlier this week. Specifically, on Wednesday afternoon, they learned through a phone call that authorities planned to take control of Ewing Hall the next day. Consequently, the notice shocked the administration. In addition, it left very little time to respond.

The situation became more serious on Thursday. At that point, officials were told to clear all movable property within 24 hours. FCC said the deadline was unrealistic. For example, the building contains generators, furniture, office equipment, and important records. Furthermore, it also holds historical items linked to the institution’s long past.

College representatives explained the short deadline created major logistical problems. In particular, they said that shifting decades of material in one day is extremely difficult. Moreover, they raised concerns about the safety of historical artifacts during the process.
