The FIFA World Cup 2026 is just hours away from kickoff, marking the beginning of a historic new chapter in international football as North America prepares to host the world’s biggest sporting event.
This edition of the tournament will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, making it the first time in history that three nations have come together to stage the World Cup. It will also be the largest edition ever, featuring 48 national teams competing across 104 matches spread over 16 host cities.
The competition officially begins on June 11, when hosts Mexico face South Africa at the Mexico City Stadium. The opening match is scheduled for 1:00 PM local time (19:00 GMT), but fans in Pakistan will have to stay up late, as it will kick off at 12:00 AM Pakistan Standard Time on June 12.
Running over 39 days, the tournament will conclude on July 19, with the grand final set to determine the next world champion. The expanded format introduces a new structure, with 12 groups of four teams each, allowing more nations than ever before to participate on football’s biggest stage.
Defending champions Argentina arrive in North America aiming to retain the title they famously won in Qatar in 2022. However, they will face strong competition from traditional football powerhouses including Brazil, France, England, Spain, and Germany, all of whom are considered serious contenders for the trophy.
Because most matches will be played across different time zones in North America, fans in Pakistan and other parts of South Asia should expect many fixtures to take place late at night or in the early morning hours.
The 48 qualified teams are divided into 12 groups (A to L), each consisting of four teams. The group stage features a diverse mix of footballing nations, creating a wide range of competitive matchups.
Group A includes Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, and the Czech Republic. Group B consists of Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar, and Switzerland. Group C features Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland. Group D brings together the United States, Paraguay, Australia, and Türkiye.
In Group E, Germany is joined by Curaçao, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador, while Group F contains the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, and Tunisia. Group G includes Belgium, Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand. Group H consists of Spain, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay.
Group I brings together France, Senegal, Iraq, and Norway. Group J includes Argentina, Algeria, Austria, and Jordan. Group K features Portugal, DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia. Finally, Group L contains England, Croatia, Ghana, and Panama.
Across the group stage and knockout rounds, a total of 104 matches will be played before a new world champion is crowned, making this the most extensive World Cup in history.
The tournament then progresses from the group stage to the Round of 32, followed by the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and ultimately the final match. Each stage will eliminate teams until only two remain to compete for the title.
The Round of 32 begins at the end of June, followed by the Round of 16 in early July. The quarter-finals are scheduled for mid-July, with the semi-finals taking place shortly after. The third-place match will be held on July 19, just before the final.
The grand finale of the FIFA World Cup 2026 will take place on July 20 at the New York New Jersey Stadium, where the new world champions will be crowned after more than a month of intense football action.
